Moving on From Formality of Multidisciplinarity : Need to Create Space for it.
Abstract:
Engaging with colleagues across universities and institutions over four decades has revealed a pervasive challenge: many academics read minimally, just enough to manage daily responsibilities in teaching and research. Those involved in teaching often rely heavily on technology, finding little reason to engage deeply with literature. The preparation of cluttered PowerPoint presentations has sustained them over the years, and the internet has become a tool for cutting, pasting, and copying content to meet publication formalities. There is a noticeable reluctance to read prescribed books or to explore beyond one’s own subject area, leading to individuals clinging tightly to their specialized disciplines. In staff rooms, interactions are limited, with many making phone calls or scrolling through messages instead of engaging in meaningful discussions. Despite this, there is a prevalent assertion among educators that they practice multidisciplinarity. This situation highlights an urgent need to move beyond the mere formality of multidisciplinarity. It is essential to create genuine space for it within the education system at every level, embracing the concept and its spirit. By fostering true multidisciplinarity, academia can encourage holistic learning, enhance collaborative research, and enrich educational experiences for educators and students.
